As Manhattan Plaza approaches its 40th birthday in 2017, we are declaring that this year's pre-birthday Block Sale will be festive, successful and fun. THAT SMOKING ISSUE
There is no further update from Related.
As many of you are aware, Related recently proposed that Manhattan Plaza become a 100% smoke-free facility and held two meetings in early December where tenants were able to voice their opinions (quite passionately) both in support and opposition to it. At the end of the second meeting, Related Management indicated it will consider tenants concerns before proceeding with their plans. As more information becomes available, the MPTA will pass that information along to all tenants. Manhattan Plaza is not the only building facing this proposed issue. In mid-November, HUD announced its plans to ban smoking in all public housing across the US which will affect hundreds of thousands of individual apartments. After a two-month period for public commentary, HUD will finalize the rule, after which housing authorities have 18 months to implement. We were recently made aware of an article about a seminar at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health which discusses the proposed HUD regulation. Interestingly enough, some of the concerns mentioned in it are similar to what residents here at Manhattan Plaza voiced at Related’s meetings. At the December 15 MPTA meeting, Barbara S. Davis, Chief Operating Officer and Tamar Shapiro, Director of Social Services of The Actors Fund briefed MP tenants and answered questions about The Actors Fund assuming management of the Rodney Kirk Center here at Manhattan Plaza. Their plan is to enhance the social services already in place and add new ones such as the recent Medicare seminars. In 2016 the MPTA will work with The Actors Fund and the Center to inform tenants about the new programs and services. Officer Maria L. Candres with the Domestic Violence Unit of the NYPD 10th Precinct addressed the June MPTA Meeting. She spoke about how concerned citizens should call 911 to report domestic violence crimes in progress and call if 311 to report suspected abuse of anyone including the elderly, children and pets. She distributed flyers describing the NYC Adult Protective Services Unit to those present, answered questions and spoke individually with tenants. Copies of the flyers are posted below.
